Funded by European Union (EU), under the management of the Office of the Minister of State for Administrative Reform (OMSAR), ICU in partnership with the Organisation for Social and Agricultural Development (OSAD) lead this project in Lebanon.
Aim of the 3 years (2016-2018) project is to engage local CSOs, Municipalities and educational institutions for the management and implementation of a system to sustain irrigation in an environmentally optimum approach, increase agricultural efficacy, reduce soil erosion, and optimize household water consumption. Target area is the semi-arid region of Deir El-Ahmar, in the Bekaa Valley, where water scarcity is a real threat for the population and all the agri-food cooperatives that operate in the area.
To achieve these goals several activities are planned like establishing a water harvesting and irrigation network, promoting synergies with relevant ongoing projects, improving farming techniques and launching awareness campaigns on the importance of sustainable water use.
In this way, the project will have both a social and an environmental impact, helping both farmers and the inhabitants of the region.
