Padua, 23 February 2018. The University of Padua, in collaboration with ICU and ACCBAT project partners, has published a scientific article on the Irrigation Water Quality Index (IWQI) developed by the University’s researchers in the ACCBAT project.
The aim of the project was to promote environmental sustainability increasing water efficiency in irrigation and the use of non-conventional water in Lebanon, Jordan and Tunisia. The project was co-financed by the European Union (90%) under the ENPI CBCMED program, of which Sardinia Region is the Managing Authority.
The Irrigation Water Quality Index is a simple tool that supports farmers in assessing the quality of treated wastewater for irrigation of their crops. The IWQI identifies water quality based on ten parameters (PH, bacteria, sulfates, metals, etc.) that could be harmful if used in irrigation of the field. Once the data have been entered, the Index indicates (with green, yellow or red light) the water quality and any recommendations for using the available water to avoid harmful effects on the crop and consumers.
