On the occasion of the workshop on the intensification of irrigated agriculture in Tunisia, held in Gammarth near Tunis on 6 and 7 May 2015, the results of the ACCBAT project were presented and discussed with representatives of the World Bank and other representatives of the Ministry of Tunisian Agriculture – DGGREE, Regional Commissions on Agricultural Development – CRDA and other organizations and institutions working in the water sector.
During the event the results of a study on intensification of irrigated agriculture in Tunisia have been presented. The study showed how it is necessary to review treated waste water policies in Tunisia. To date, in fact, only a very limited quantity of this additional water resources (2%) is used for irrigation in the country.
The workshop was gave the opportunity to disseminate and share the results of the Project that ICU is carring out in Tunisia, Lebanon and Giordania. The training of farmers and experts working in agriculture and the creation of irrigation perimeters using treated waste water realized within the project, represent a replicable example of efficient use of water resources for agriculture in the country.to be replicable.
Institutional representatives who attended the event, such as Tunisian Minister of Agriculture expressed their appreciation for ACCBAT activities and their coherence with the measures to be taken in the future to promote a rationalization of water use in Tunisia.
