As the International Day of Clean Energy is celebrated on January 26th, recognized by the UN, ICU proudly aligns its strategic vision with the global call for a just and inclusive transition to clean energy. Energy lies at the very core of a challenge to protect the planet. Clean energy not only plays a vital role in reducing emissions but also addresses issues faced by vulnerable communities worldwide.
There is a crucial connection between clean energy, socio-economic development, and environmental sustainability. Currently, 675 million people, predominantly in Sub-Saharan Africa, lack access to reliable power sources. For these populations, the absence of clean energy hampers education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Similarly, many developing regions still heavily rely on polluting fossil fuels, perpetuating poverty.
ICU’s commitment to the energy sector resonates with the UN’s call for a comprehensive transition. Over the past 15 years, ICU has been actively involved, providing efficient solutions, technical know-how on Renewable Energy (RE) & Energy Efficiency (EE), and energy audits. Our focus on capacity building and skills development aligns seamlessly with the goal of ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all by 2030 shared with the UN.
Key Initiatives and Projects
ICU’s projects exemplify our commitment to addressing the challenges in the energy sector. These initiatives span various countries, aiming to promote sustainable economic growth, accessible and sustainable education, efficient cooling solutions, and access to renewable energy in underdeveloped rural areas.
Among these initiatives, there are the following:
- TESSA – Energetic transition and sustainable economic growth in Lebanon through the development of green MSMEs and the promotion of full, decent and qualified employment (Lebanon)
- BRIGHT – Energy and Inclusion for Accessible and Sustainable Education (Lebanon)
- NDC – Increasing Access and Planning for Efficient Cooling Solutions in Jordan (Jordan)
- REESTART– Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Energy Transition And Reinforced Trust between SMEs and ESCOs (Lebanon)
- ESMES – Energy Smart Mediterranean Schools Network (Jordan, Spain, Tunisia, Italy, Lebanon)
- RE-dev – Access to renewable energy in Burundi’s off-grid areas as a driving force for socio-economic development (Burundi)
- RE-B – Electrification of rural areas of Burundi through the activation of two mini and two macro hydroelectric plants, the strengthening of the photovoltaic system and the connection to the electricity grid (Burundi)
Adopting clean energy is not only pivotal for social and economic development but also integral to the fight against climate change. ICU emphasizes the need to end reliance on fossil fuels and invest in clean, accessible, affordable, sustainable, and reliable energy sources. Our projects contribute to this effort by focusing on renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency, aligning with the global push for a cleaner, greener future. ICU stands as a proactive contributor to clean energy initiatives. Together, these efforts pave the way for a sustainable and inclusive future.
