The project ProAgro – Support to the development of sustainable micro agro-food enterprises and creation of employment opportunities in disadvantaged areas of Tunisia – AID 11906 is a three-year project financed by the Italian Agency for cooperation – AICS and launched on 1 November 2019 thanks to the collaboration of ICU with local partners, such as the Agence de Promotion des Investissements Agricoles -APIA (Ministry of Agriculture ), the Agence de Vulgarisation et de Formation Agricole- AVFA and the Tunisian-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry – CTICI, and Italian partners, such as WE WORLD – G. V.C. ONLUS (Tunisia office), University of Tuscia – Department of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences – DAFNE, E4Impact Foundation and the Sacro Cuore University, Piacenza – Department of Food Science and Technology for a sustainable agro-food chain – DiSTAS.
The project aims at improving living conditions in rural areas of Tunisia, through the strengthening of micro-enterprises in the agri-food sector. Throughout the activities, micro-enterprises in the milk, vegetables, date, aromatic and medicinal herbs, and olive trees located in the governorates of Beja, Kasserine, Kebili, Le Kef, Mahdia and Sidi Bouzid, will have a better production, processing and marketing capacity, and will be better integrated into the local market.
Based on the needs of Tunisian agri-food companies to be more competitive, the project proposes a three-year intervention in following three main areas:
1) the capacity building of agri-food micro-enterprises through technical-managerial trainings, assistance for the development of improvement plans and the accompaniment and support to access to credit;
2) the training of young graduates and their accompaniment to start up technical assistance activities in favour of local producers. This activity combined with activities of representation of companies supplying inputs and technologies will allow young technicians to generate an income and to contribute to spread knowledge and innovation among local companies;
3) the strengthening of the market links between Tunisian and Italian companies, in order to promote marketing opportunities for Tunisian companies’ products on the Italian market and for Italian inputs and technologies on the Tunisian market.
The project total budget is EUR 2,000,000.
