Burundi, February 24th 2017. ICU organized a day of presentation of the project to improve rural energy access in Burundi. It is a project to rehabilitate 4 mini hydropower plants with rehabilitation and extension of power lines.
These power stations are the properties of the ABER, which is a Burundian Rural Electrification Agency and is the technical partner of the project.
The project is funded by the European Union and EEP (Energy and Environment Partnership) with an extension funded by OFID (OPEC Fund for International Development). It began in 2015 and will end on 31 August 2017. The total amount allocated to its activities is equal to 2,517,014 Euros. At the end of the project, the current production of the 4 microcentrals which is 105Kw will increase to 435Kw. This action contributes to the expectation of Objective 7 of the MDGs of 2030.
There was a good participation by the guests and debates which made it possible to identify certain problems related to the electrification of rural areas which could help in the future in the continuity of the project and for the future projects.
