Amman – October 20th 2015. The ceremony for the inauguration of the prosthetic facilities done by ICU (Institute for University Cooperation) as part of an emergency project “100 Feet To Walk Towards Peace”, funded by the Italian Development Cooperation took place on Tuesday 20th of October at Our Lady of Peace Center for the Disabled (OLOPC) in Amman.
The event was held under the patronage of the Jordanian Ministry of Health and the Italian Embassy. Present at the ceremony were H.E. the Jordan Minister of Health, Dr. Ali Haysan, the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Paolo Gentiloni and H.E. the Italian Ambassador to Jordan Mr. Giovanni Brauzzi.
A new prosthetic workshop was realized at OLOPC, within the Italian-funded project implemented by ICU in partnership with OLOPC and the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD). The project targets 100 amputee beneficiaries, both Jordanian and Syrian, providing them with prosthesis and rehabilitation. The two locations for the projects are Amman and Irbid Governorates.
The prosthetic facilities consist of a fully equipped laboratory for manufacturing prosthesis, refurbishing a part of buildings of the center, and of a mobile unit, allowing for beneficiaries to be reached all over the country, especially designed and customized which include a small prosthetic laboratory for emergency reparation, fine tuning and periodic maintenance of the prosthesis, as well of a “clinic” part for case assessment, measurements, fitting and final delivery.
Around a large group of project beneficiaries, within the guests attending the ceremony stand out local authorities, a delegation from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bishop Maroun Lahham and Bishop Salim Sayegh, representatives of some UN agencies and of the main International and Local NGOs operating in the Health sector, experts on prosthesis, orthotics and rehabilitation.
After the screening of a video presenting the project, the minister of Health and the Italian minister of Foreign Affairs visited the new facilities and proceeded with the ribbon cutting.
